You might be the world’s best snowboarder.
Or fastest sous chef, magnificent marathon runner, or champion bee keeper.
You might have a ridiculous ease for climbing trees; hailed a local town hero for all the cats and frisbees you save!
You might have a most delicate tongue, making you one of the finest wine tasters to ever step foot in the vineyards of Australia, Italy, or France.
You might be a beautiful writer; a writer whose words will resonate with someone who was otherwise unreachable.
You might be anything…. You will never know until you try. There are a gazillion untapped talents in the world just waiting to be discovered.
This is what I think about every time I try something new. “You never know, I could be the world’s best at this!” Like when I picked up a guitar for the first time…
I rested its gorgeous wood frame on my legs, felt the metal strings beneath my fingertips, I took a deep and meaningful breath. “Here I am… the next Jimmie Hendrix.”
Ha! If only… after 20 minutes my ears were bleeding and my fingers were crying. Not exactly the debut I had in mind. Clearly the guitar is not my secret gift, and that’s okay. I’ll just continue to learn the long, hard, old-fashioned way. (A few months from now I should be able to plunk out Happy Birthday, so that will be exciting!)
If there’s something you’ve always wanted to try, try it. If you’re given an opportunity to do something new, do it! Let yourself explore and play.
A friend of mine was on vacation with his wife last year and she invited him to join her for yoga on the beach. He really wasn’t interested, but they were on a holiday so why not. Three poses later he was in love! No one would’ve guessed it and here he is – a dedicated yogi for life.
We all hold within us the sweetest inner wishes and copious curiosity. Those little flickers in your heart are often very tiny and you might go years and years without even noticing them. From this article on, I’d like you to start paying extra attention to your inner self.
If you catch a flicker, let it light you.
Try new things, welcome that little voice that whispers “Let’s try that” and embrace whatever the outcome may be. (You’re bound to have some laughs at least.)
Your inner self longs to play; embrace it. Together you can welcome in endless fun and adventure. Who knows where you’ll go!
Perhaps we’ll see you crushing the hugest waves or scuba diving ancient shipwrecks, winning a hot sauce contest, or designing the next electric car. Or maybe we’ll see you on the cover of American Quilters magazine. Who knows!
Who knows what you can do – you just have to try. Try and have fun. Because you never know, you just might be the greatest of all time…
Or you might be utterly mediocre or completely terrible. Either way, onto the next!
Plenty more flickers where that came from.
