Here are five “focusing questions” that will help you to pause, reflect and discover the voice within.
The goal of this exercise is presence and discovering all of the wisdom and direction that is immediately available in the here-and-now, right there inside of you. There’s a deeper voice that’s loving and encouraging. Listen!
Asking and answering these five questions will help you hear the “deeper voice,” leading you to a greater sense of presence, focus, and personal awareness.
Do it now; do it often! I hope you will make it a habit.
1. What am I doing?
What am I doing right now? What am I doing with my life? Do I feel contentment, or is there an increasing desire to do more? Am I doing what I have set out to do? Would I describe myself as “expanding” or “contracting” in my actions? Why?
2. What am I feeling?
What predominant feeling state am I experiencing? What direction is it telling me to take? What boundary is it inviting me to create? Do I want to change this feeling? If I had a choice, what emotion would I choose to feel right now?
3. What do I want?
What do I want right now? How will I get it? What do I want out of life? What changes do I need to make that will leave me more fulfilled? Where are my energies blocked in achieving what I want to achieve? How do I remove these barriers?
4. What am I avoiding?
What is it that I am avoiding because I’m afraid, or it seems too hard? Is there a habit I need to break? Is there an “elephant in the room” of a relationship that I need to address? What next actions am I afraid to take? How will I deal with this fear?
5. What do I expect?
What are my needs and expectations of others? How might I get those needs and expectations fulfilled in healthy ways? What are my needs and expectations of myself and life? Are they realistic and fair?
