As I started on my spiritual journey, the idea of guides did not initially resonate with me. What were they anyway?
Friends were encouraging me to connect with animals, flowers, and earth guides, but nothing vibed with me. However, I was intrigued—the thought of a spiritual being watching over me and guiding me made me feel comforted.
That was when I started to look at developing stronger relationships with other guides. But it raised other questions:
- How do I know who makes the right spiritual guide for me?
- How do I even begin to find out what guides are out there?
I share my own journey and some tips below.
How to Choose the “Right” Spiritual Guide
1. Get to know what entities resonate with you
If you are very new to this, you can google “spirit guides” and see what comes up.
You could get hints from your personal life too. What do you gravitate towards? Greek mythology? Ancient Egyptian history? Animals? Plants? Elements?
Do you feel a pull towards archangels? Do certain cultures, practices, gods/goddesses attract you?
The ones that resonate with you or that you are more attracted to are great candidates for guides!
2. Choose one that has an energy that you are trying to embody
You may be looking to bring in the energy of abundance into your life, for instance. In this case, Hindu goddess Lakshmi may align. She’s the goddess of financials, wealth, abundance, and beauty.
Whatever it is that you need in your life, there is a spirit guide that can help you with it.
Get on Google again and get to know some of the deities and gods that represent these energies.
Which ones strikes a strong energetic chord with you?
3. Which areas of your life do you need help in?
There are guides for all areas of our lives.
For instance, when I needed help with managing my time, I connected with Thoth, the ancient Egyptian god of time.
When I wanted to work on self-love, I turned to Aphrodite.
When I was craving a can-do, fiery, masculine energy, I turned to Sekhmet—one of my favorite guides!
So have a think about the areas of your life that you want to work on. Then seek out and connect with the guides that are “in charge” of those areas.
4. Meditate and see who makes their presence known
What helps sometimes is to meditate and ask, “Who should I work with?” and then see who makes their presence known.
I did this recently when I was looking for a guide who could help me balance my divine masculine and feminine energy, and Mary Magdalene came through. She had been knocking on my spiritual door for a while already, so I let her in!
Spirit guides may appear in your mind or you may keep seeing them pop up in different places, like in books or on television.
Pay attention—it could be your guides trying to connect and make their presence known!
How to Connect with Your Guides
Once you’ve found your spirit guides, it’s important to keep up a practice of consistent connection.
1. Write open letters
This is one of the most effective ways of connecting with them and letting their energy flow through. I write letters to my guides pretty often. The things I talk about? My day. My problems. My wishes. I tell them I have an issue and write to them for help.
Before each letter-writing session, I meditate on my guide or play soothing music in the background to quiet my mind. It’s a pretty amazing feeling as you feel your guide take over as you are writing.
I’ve gotten some amazing thoughts and solutions from these letter-writing sessions, so do give it a shot!
2. Talk to them daily
Ask for help! Our guides always want to chat, so call them in—confide in them like you would a friend and have random conversations with them several times a day. It’s pretty fun!
3. Give thanks
There are some people who take their guides for granted—they call them in when they have a problem and then ignore them once the issue is resolved.
Our guides are not Aunt Agony or a servant at our beck and call, so we have to be careful of continuously taking from them without giving back. Instead, express your gratitude frequently and talk to them whether you need help or not.
You could even have an altar table with offerings—flowers, candles, oils, photos of your guides. Whatever helps you express gratitude in a tangible, meaningful way.
4. Meditate
This is one of the quickest ways to connect with your guides—by inviting them into your subconscious. Even a 5-minute guided meditation is useful. There are specific meditations that cater to specific guides, but if not readily available, any meditative music works just as well.
Connecting with our spirit guides can be a fun part of our spiritual toolbox and journey and can also be a great way of strengthening our spiritual muscles. Have fun finding your guide!
