How to Create a Sacred Practice that Works for You

BY Jennifer Urezzio        March 4, 2016

I have nothing against meditation. I like Deepak Chopra and I have participated in several of his 21 day meditation series. And, I don’t love to mediate and I (and the Divine) am cool with that.

Leading a spiritual life to me means being without judgement and turning toward the consciousness of love. The only requirement for a sacred practice is connection that brings you joy and awareness.

Ready for this? You don't have to meditate.

Here’s a conversation I had with a client regarding creating a sacred practice that worked in her life.

Me: “You don’t have to meditate.”

Client: “Really? I don’t?”

Me: “You are a renegade and highly innovative. You require a practice that is flexible, adaptable and contains movement. You get to bring any element you want into that practice and you don’t have to do the same thing each day. In fact, if you try to do the same thing each day, you may get bored and then you may stop setting aside time to connect with the Divine.”

Then, there was a very long pause on the phone. Finally I said, “Hello? Are you there?” And, through tears, she explained that she had been trying to fit herself into this box of what sacred practice was and when she didn’t succeed she felt an overwhelming feeling of failure. And this conversation just set her free to choose how to connect to the Divine in her own way.

Creating a Sacred Practice That Works in Your Life

I believe sacred practice contains several components: Connection, Conversation, and Commitment. You get to determine what the being and doing step is for each one of these components. Below are some ideas for each one.

1. Connection - This is about connecting to yourself and the Divine. You can do this by walking in nature, by being quiet, and/or by activating your connection with the Divine by simply stating, “Divine Intelligence, create a conscious connection with my higher power." The most important thing is that this connection doesn’t feel forced or like a chore.

2. Conversation – This is all about asking and receiving answers. You can do this in that connection time, by journaling, using any Divination tool, or simply asking and listening for the answer(s).

3. Commitment – This is about you dedicating yourself to listening, reflection, awareness and transformation. This means noticing where and when you don’t feel connected to your higher power and asking, “What do I need to activate (turn on like a super-power), let go of, accept, or allow to move back into a deep connection?”

Don’t forget to incorporate your body during your sacred practice. Often we forget about this great Divine tool, so include movement, ask questions, and allow your body to answer and/or just practice offering deep love to the vehicle that is holding your greatest asset, your Soul.

Sacred practice is about joy and connection. It is about creating a foundation of knowing that you are loved and supported by something bigger than your own mind. When we continue to participate in our sacred practice, I believe this creates a greater sense of safety, joy, and ease in our lives.
