How to Have a Great Conversation with Your Soul and the Divine

BY Jennifer Urezzio        January 10, 2016

It took me a long time to have a good conversation with myself and the Divine. Mainly because I thought I was having a conversation but it was really a bitch session.

Being in a good relationship with yourself and the Divine takes practice. I believe all of us really want to know that the Divine has a need for us, and at the same time, we are so afraid that we are unworthy that we spend a lot of time counting the ways of our unworthiness.

Being a good Soul and spiritual conversationalist takes practice and a little effort.

Over the years, I noticed that there are several elements to creating a great conversation between you, your Soul and the Divine.

Use Familiar Language and Images

So here’s the thing… your Soul and the Divine are very, very smart! The title, Supreme Being says it all. And sometimes The Divine simply talks over our human heads. And this creates frustration and doubt of our connection.

Before sitting down in sacred practice to have a sacred conversation with the Divine, simply request that the Divine utilize language and images that are familiar to you. And in those cases where you feel, hear or see something that you don’t understand, simply ask for another way of understanding what your Soul and the Divine is trying to share with you.

Bring a Pen and Forget Judgement

When in conversation with the Divine, write things down. You might not understand them immediately and it might require some time to fully understand what your Soul is trying to share with you. Judgment in any conversation doesn’t allow for true collaboration. When you notice judgment coming on, pause and breathe and say, “I am able and willing to be open to all possibilities in this conversation.”

Be the Center of Attention

This is your time to reflect, connect and understand your Soul and the Divine. If you notice that you are moving into blaming others or circumstances, pause and ask yourself what you are adding to each situation. Remember, this isn’t a race – so take your time to connect.

Ask Too Much

This is your time to receive! So ask and ask again. Bring questions to your connection time with your Soul, bring thoughts and ideas of what you desire, need and require. I suggest ending each sacred conversation with your Soul and the Divine with, “What else would my Soul and the Divine like me to know?”

Be Present

There is nothing worse than having a conversation with someone who isn’t present. And being present takes practice. If you find yourself drifting to your to-do list, pause and reestablish your connection with the Divine by simply stating, “Divine Intelligence, create a conscious connection between me, my Soul and the Divine.”

Let Go of the Name Game

Often we have baggage around how we address the Divine. I hear this a lot with clients. I have heard it all – Universe, Divine, Mother/Father, God and even Bob.

So ask this question of yourself. What is the name you call out to when you are in pain? Is it God, Divine, Universe, Bob? This is the name you most associate with your higher power.

Ask Open-Ended Questions

I’m a spiritual renegade and I believe the Divine is the biggest renegade of all. In my experience, no one likes to be told what do to or how to do it. Open-ended questions allow for possibilities, and isn’t that why you're in a conversation with the Divine in the first place, to embody the possibilities?

Remember, It’s Your Party

Remember, this is your relationship and yours alone. You get to determine the rules and structure for your relationship with the Divine. Here are some additional questions that might support a great conversation with the Divine:

  • What am I missing or not accepting that will support me in knowing that I’m loved and guided?
  • In what ways can I honor myself and my relationship with the Divine?
  • How can I embrace my Divinity more and more each day?

Good conversations are based on profound respect, being present, and most importantly wanting to connect!
