is a tiny, little story for
all ages that
Andy and I have been begging Mom to

Dandelion in 1994. Be sure to read "A
few words from Sheelagh...," below, to learn about how, when and why
THE
LONELY LITTLE TREE
was written!

All
alone, in a vast
meadow, grew a tree. It was a very young, very small tree,
scarcely taller than the grasses that grew around it.
And because it was alone,
the only tree as far as the eye could see, it did not know the way
of trees, nor even that it was a tree. All it knew was that it was.
That, and the great,
ever-changing sky above it with its shining sun and gleaming moon,
its million stars and tumbling clouds. And all day, every day, it
yearned towards that sky, thinking it a most beautiful and wondrous
thing.
So intrigued, in fact, was
the tree with the glory above it that for a very long time it was
unaware of its own growth upwards or the silent spread of its roots
growing strong and deep in the earth below.
But one day, bowing low
beneath the worst storm in the memory of the meadow, the tree was
astonished to discover that where before it had only one slender
trunk, now, miraculously, branches grew in all directions from that
thickened, sturdy trunk, and each branch was laden with the most
beautiful leaves....

"Dear Sheelagh: Thank you again
for your wisdom and your words. Your little book was beautifully
written and the lesson was perfect! No matter where we are in our
journey, it seems we constantly need gentle reminders to keep our
suitcases "light", so that our baggage doesn't weigh us down."

A
few words from
Sheelagh...

Many
stories, I believe, begin with a vague
idea, a snatch of conversation
overheard who knows where, an item
in the paper, a character... The bits
and pieces fester away in the brain
until there comes a day when, in a burst
of creativity, the pieces come together
with a noisy click and a story is born.
Other
stories come about because... Well,
because they have to. Here's how this
one "happened": I was employed
as General Manager of an
uppity tennis
club. It was a Friday afternoon,
in the Fall of 1985. I was
immersed in payroll. We had a big
tournament planned for the weekend. The
phone rang, it
was my son, Andy, "the design
guru", calling from art school.
"Hey,
Mom! Guess what? We're going to be
learning how books are made!"
"Wow!
Lucky you! Always wondered how they did
that. What's your part, the cover
design?"
"We
each have to do our own, start to
finish."
"Double
wow! Can't wait to see it. But right now
I have to..."
"Yeah...
Only, see, the thing is, we have to
write a story and I was
wondering..."
"What
were you wondering, Andy?"
"I
was wondering if you could, like, maybe
write one for me?"
"Oh,
honey. Any other time I'd love to give
it a try but right now I'm swamped. When
do you need it?"
"Monday
morning."
"Two-days-from-now-Monday-morning?"
"Yeah."
"That
means it would have to go out in
tonight's mail."
"Yeah."
"Good-Bye,
Andrew!"
I finished
payroll. Rolled a fresh sheet of
paper into
the typewriter, looked out the window at
a tree I often admired, and began with
the way I was feeling. "All
alone..."
