Announcing our 29th Wonders of the World Tour to…

MACHU PICCHU, PERU

Why We Chose Peru

Words fail in describing the intensity and wonder of this adventure. We've now taken six groups to these ancient and awe-inspiring ruins. What most people don’t realize from photographs is that this site in the clouds (Machu Picchu) lies atop a mountain, like the one behind it in the picture to the right. Getting there requires a nearly vertical ascent (by bus, unless you want to hike) on a road that snakes upward. How did an “ancient civilization” build it?!

No one returns home as the same person they were before seeing this. Additionally, the modern day Peruvian people, culture, and cuisine are out of this world—warm, welcoming, and delicious. Finally, the accommodations we've chosen leave all of us returning home feeling nostalgic. From the modern Tambo del Inca just outside of Cusco to the incredibly charming, upscale bungalows in Aguas Calientes just beneath Machu Picchu, no one wants to check out!

We’ll spend 9 amazing days together, exploring the countryside, staying in exquisite locations, and jamming together on the nature of life, dreams, and happiness. Check out the places we’ll go, below! This will be a truly unforgettable adventure we’ll remember for the rest of our lives – the beginning of new friendships, new discoveries, and new possibilities that exceed our wildest expectations.

Oh, The Places We’ll Go

Here is some of what we have to look forward to together over the course of this great adventure.

There will be plenty of time for group discussion and Q&A.

Give Back

To The Places We Visit

It’s been our tradition on each trip to give back to the people who call the places we visit, “Home.” We do this in a numbers of ways, including visiting orphanages, schools, reservations, or refuges—bringing with us supplies they may need, donations, and short “Mike Dooley Pep Talks.”

Adventure Schedule

THIS TRIP HAS BEEN POSTPONED. JOIN THE WAITLIST TO BE NOTIFIED OF UPDATES.

DAY 1
TUESDAY, MARCH 29

DEPARTURE

If you are traveling from North America or Europe, you will depart today for Peru.  At this point in time, airlines have not yet scheduled flights for us to utilize for group flights.  In early fall airline schedules should be back to normal.  We will revisit booking group flights, which will likely be from either Miami or Dallas. If you would like to take advantage of group flights, please indicate this when you register and we will email you in the fall with the group flight information.

Altitude Sickness: When visiting cities like Cusco (11,000 feet above sea level), shortness of breath and heart palpitations are normal due to the scarcity of oxygen. Some people may experience headache, loss of appetite, fatigue and nausea. Most symptoms develop the first day at high altitude, though, occasionally, travelers have delayed reactions. The best advice is to avoid physical activity on your first day in the highlands, drink plenty of liquids, including the local remedy: coca – leaf tea (it’s perfectly legal). You should also avoid alcohol and heavy food intake.

Shaping Up: To enjoy your trip to the fullest, you should be in good physical and mental health. Our exploration of Peru will include some hiking and walking tours. These tours can last two to three hours and are at higher than average altitude.

Click Here for pre-departure checklist, packing tips, etc.

DAY 2
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 30

CUSCO TO SACRED VALLEY

Upon arrival at the Cusco airport we’re greeted with a welcome coca tea and local bread which will perk us up and help with altitude adjustment. Cusco is 11,000 feet above sea level! Afterwards, we proceed to the Sacred Valley. On the way we’ll meet 2 shamans and take part in the Andean ritual “Pago a la Tierra” (payment to the Earth).

Afterwards we’ll visit Awanakancha, a living museum of Andean cameloids including Llamas, Alpacas and the rarely seen Vicunas and Guanacos. Lunch will be served at a lovely Hacienda and we will arrive at the Tambo del Inka Hotel mid-afternoon. Take some time to settle in before our first TUT Talk, followed by dinner at Hotel Tambo del Inka.

Accommodations: Hotel Tambo Del Inka (Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 3
THURSDAY, MARCH 31

SACRED VALLEY

In the morning we’ll start with a TUT Talk, before heading out to visit the Pisac ruins and marketplace. After visiting the ruins, you may hike down to town, or take transportation into town. Here you can bargain with the locals for your favorite gifts for the folks at home. Although it is very popular with tourists and locals alike, this colorful and vivid market still retains its local charm. Villagers, sometimes traveling from far away, gather to barter and sell their products. In addition, a large handicraft fair is organized by the Pisac and Cusco craftsmen who exhibit and sell a wide variety of fine crafts such as woven goods, sweaters, alpaca rugs, tapestry, sculpture, jewelry, etc. If the crowd becomes too much, the café balconies offer a superb overview and great opportunity for people watching!

On the way back to the hotel, the group will visit a local orphanage in the Sacred Valley, interact with the children and present them with a much needed donation. This evening enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Accommodations: Hotel Tambo Del Inka (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 4
FRIDAY, APRIL 1

SACRED VALLEY

After breakfast, we will gather for a TUT Talk and then immerse ourselves in the Andean culture with a visit to the typical rural village of Maras in the midst of the Sacred Valley. We’ll be welcomed by a group of villagers, who will introduce us to their culture, customs and traditions by means of several workshops.

After lunch, the adventure continues to the ancient village of Ollantaytambo, the “last living Inca village of Peru,” including a visit to a local home to see the lifestyle people here lead. The ruins of Ollantaytambo are one of the few places where the Incas defeated the Spanish Conquistadors. We’ll have an impressive cooking demonstration and picnic lunch in the Sacred Valley before heading back to the hotel.

Note: The group will be split into two smaller groups and while group A is at Maras, group B will visit Ollantaytambo and vice versa in the afternoon.

Tonight, we transfer to a special dinner at the hillside Hacienda Huayoccari.

Accommodations: Hotel Tambo Del Inka (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)

DAY 5
SATURDAY, APRIL 2

SACRED VALLEY TO MACHU PICCHU

In the morning, transfer to the Ollantaytambo train station in the Sacred Valley for a ride onboard privately chartered cars on the Vistadome train to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, guides greet us for the walk from the train station to the hotel (5 minutes) where lunch is served.

After lunch, it’s time to take a shuttle bus to the most famous ruin site of South America – Machu Picchu, for a guided tour. Machu Picchu – also known as “The Lost City of the Incas” might be the most familiar symbol of the Inca Empire. It was built around AD 1450 at the top of a granite mountain and UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1983. Recently, it has also been named one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World” and the most visited ecological destination in the world. There are many theories about Machu Picchu, but one thing is for sure – it is one of the most impressive sites you’ll ever see!

After the tour, if time allows (Machu Picchu closes at 5pm), you may enjoy some free time to wander around on your own. Finally, take the shuttle bus down to town and walk back to the hotel.

End the day with dinner at the hotel this evening.

Accommodations: Hotel Inkaterra Machu Picchu (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)

DAY 6
SUNDAY, APRIL 3

MACHU PICCHU

Today, you may choose from one of the following included TUT Adventures on your own: A return ticket and transfer to Machu Picchu is included.

Morning Visit to Machu Picchu: See the sunrise in this magnificent setting, use the time to see Machu Picchu in another light and to explore this marvelous site on your own.

Huayna Picchu Hike: For the more adventurous and active, this hike to the mountain behind Machu Picchu offers totally different views of the ruins. The hike is strenuous and if you are concerned about altitude, we don’t recommend this activity.

Relax at the Hotel: Take some time for yourself to see the marvelous hotel gardens or wildlife, make your own tea from the tea garden, and more.

Later, join Mike for a TUT Talk, then plan to eat dinner on your own or with a group of TUT Adventurers at the hotel.

Accommodations: Hotel Inkaterra Machu Picchu (Breakfast and Dinner)

DAY 7
MONDAY, APRIL 4

MACHU PICCHU

Start the day off right with our TUT Talk. Today has been left with plenty of free time to explore at your leisure. Where We Are Staying

Tambo del Inka

Tambo del Inka

The Tambo del Inka goes to great length to ensure an indelible stay, offering refined dining, a therapeutic spa, and premier fitness center, along with an emerald lagoon and blooming riverside gardens. The hotel’s elevation is a couple of thousand feet lower than Cusco's, so guests who go to Tambo first have an opportunity to acclimate gently. They also have the opportunity to explore the Sacred Valley at leisure, visiting villages renowned for their textiles or hiking to pre-Incan ruins. Rooms are spacious, with floor-to-ceiling windows, flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi.

Inkaterra Machu Picchu

Inkaterra Machu Picchu

Tucked into an exotic jungle valley overlooking the roaring Urubamba River and the razorback peaks of the Andes, InkaTerra’s Eden-like environment comes as a pleasant shock, with hummingbirds and butterflies flitting around well-spaced dwellings with adobe walls and terra-cotta-tile roofs. Classical music sets the tone, avocado, coffee, guava and orchid plants infuse the air, and the sound of trickling water soothes the soul. The exceptionally winsome guest rooms housed in separate whitewashed cottages vary in size and have skylighted ceilings that provide much-needed light through the lush vegetation. Locally inspired fabrics, tile floors with area rugs, dark period furniture, and ornate wrought-iron queen or twin beds with tartan spreads and alpaca blankets are common to all rooms. All have fireplaces and large eucalyptus timber beams overhead.

Palacio del Inka

Palacio del Inka

A storied mansion dating back nearly five centuries, Palacio del Inka stands in the historic center of Cusco. Impressive stone staircases, arches and corridors, and the best elevators in the city lead to newly renovated guest rooms. Sleeping quarters display classic accents: ornate period molding, reproduction appointments, fine fabrics and upholstery and ornate window treatments. Beautifully framed mirrors reflect the watercolors of Cusco and roomy sitting areas, minibars, bottled water and free Wi-Fi are all standard. This elegant hotel reveals a secret at every turn and is one of the best properties in Cusco.

Wow, these are unusual times, so we greatly appreciate your faith in traveling with us and we can’t wait to see you on this trip!

Given the everchanging COVID related circumstances we now face, here are some extra considerations to weigh before committing to this journey:

For the safety of our group and the people we will come in contact with, and depending on the evolution of events between now and our departure, it’s possible that our airlines, hotels, and/or vendors of choice, or even the governments of Peru or the USA, may require proof of vaccination to travel. Conversely, if this does not happen, please know it’s possible we might have attendees who choose not to be vaccinated. As of this moment, none of this is known or knowable. All things considered, if you want to maximize chances of traveling with this group, based on parameters we have no control over, it is advisable that you receive your COVID vaccine well before travel.

Refunds related to trip changes caused by Covid-19, Variants, or Other Pandemics:

  1. If, prior to our departure, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, or WHO, or the Peruvian government advises travelers to avoid non-essential travel, to avoid gatherings of 50 or more people, or to shelter in place/stay at home as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic (and such notice covers our event dates), you will receive a 100% refund of whatever you have paid.
  2. In the unlikely event that such advisories are issued after departure but before you return home, all costs incurred to shorten or lengthen our adventure to remain compliant (such as testing, masks, quarantine, meals, hotel stays, transportation, or the like), will be each traveler’s responsibility.
  3. Regardless of the above, any COVID tests travelers may be required to take before, during, or after our trip, as well as any unforeseen COVID related expenses incurred for any reason, will be at the traveler’s expense.
  4. If non-essential travel continues to be allowed to Peru during our travel dates, but you decide not to travel for any reason after making payments, you will be responsible for all cancellation charges – please see our refund policy in the FAQ section below..
