I've tried everything, but I can't stop gaining weight!!

Q: I have been gaining weight for the past 13 years and now I am 70 pounds overweight. I have tried therapy, diets, exercise, and through it all, constant prayer. (I was abused as a child and I wonder, can this be a tie-in?).

I'm terribly ashamed of what I have done to my body temple.  I teach everything by example... how can I teach the purity of being a 'living example' when I look as I do?

A: There is little I can suggest that you don’t know. I would, however, point out that I believe that while assigning such conditions to a past event may sometimes be helpful, it often runs the risk of loading you up with baggage that just might be irrelevant, yet problematic in solving your issue. I always suggest a forward view. The only thing between your body today and the body of your dreams, are the thoughts you think from this day forward. So dwell on the body of your dreams, not the “problem” body, and for good measure, remind yourself that while you might want the comfort of food, so do you want the comfort of a slender self. Whichever desire is greater will win.

Lastly, I think very often that over-eating, which is your issue, is simply a habit. And therefore one that you can control. Forget the diets, just eat less (yes, maybe easier said than done, until, that is, you really want to lose the weight).

In the meantime, don’t be so hard on yourself!! You rock!
