Recovering from Hurricane Katrina...

Q: I live in the ravaged city of New Orleans and have imagined clearly the speedy reconstruction and revival of the city and the Gulf Coast regions hardest hit, and have prayed diligently for the necessary circumstances to bring about its own manifestation.  I have acted upon this desire for 8 months. If you read the papers and watch TV, which is of course, not the real story, you will know that we have improved very little 8 months later. I am volunteering each day so I feel I am acting on my intention. I have also been “depressed” myself, along with most of this area’s citizens, for I absorb the sadness and despair all around me. My own personal emotional difficulty has NOT been resolved, no matter my intentions or actions.

Do you have further suggestions for our plight?   Have you walked in our shoes or experienced anything of this magnitude affecting so many lives? Please explain further and I will indeed reconsider my interpretation.

A: I sympathize with your dilemma.

Whenever you are dealing with the expectations of specific people, you are messing with the cursed hows, as well as their own beliefs and limitations.

You can’t “make” Bush, or FEMA, or anyone fix things faster with your thoughts or expectations unless they, and all involved in the mass drama, allow the influence.

You could instead focus on a harmonious life elsewhere, where you are happy, safe, clean, and able to provide for your own fulfillment AND peace of mind. You just can’t condition the hows of it all (not to say you can’t follow hunches and instincts, and follow your heart).

I’m not suggesting you move, you probably love the New Orleans area, all the people, and have family and friends there, so the alternative would be to ENJOY the magic and miracles of the rebuilding process and relish your role in it (rather than focusing on all that is wrong with the reconstruction and feeling utterly powerless), finding perhaps even more happiness there than in some idyllic place elsewhere. Fighting, resisting, or focusing on the slow progress is like fighting the entire Universe. It will be what it will be based on everyone's feelings and beliefs and actions in New Orleans (albeit, again, you can influence this all).

I wrote an Ask Mike answer in the disasters section of the TUT site – you might go there for info on Mass Manifestations.

Very best wishes!
