Soulmates...
Q: Dear Mike, Are we supposed to love everyone
the same, like The Universe does? Do we only
really choose to marry so we can relax knowing we have the security of a
committed partner? I guess I'm a romantic and
I want to believe in the magical wondrous connection of soulmates but
is it just a fairytale? My husband recently
died very suddenly and unexpectedly. He was young but we were together
for a long time. I'm trying to understand because we really had magic,
Mike. Was it just an illusion?
A: “Soulmates” are a
fairytale, in the sense that you mean, but
this is good news,
because it means you can love again, deeply.
But just because there aren't "soul mates", in the "one and only" sense,
doesn't mean that all relationships are about fear and security. Of
course there are "divinely"
special relationships, yours was one, but there's
no limit to the number any one person can have.
Can't you still be a romantic and believe in magical wondrous
connections without thinking that that must mean you can only be happy
with one person for eternity?
